Atheism

In a previous post we talked about on what religion the Church of Integrity is based. The church is not only inspired by the religions mentioned in that post but also on Atheism. We gave a short hint about this relation whe we added the Atheist Blogroll. In this post we'll go more in depth into how atheism influenced us.

The atheist movement is on a rise. We believe there are many different reasons why people become atheists. Many are frustrated with how religion seems to bash and pervert science as some religious groups have done with the theory of evolution. In the Church of Integrity we of course base our world view on science so you shouldn't end up with any frustrations like that here. Others are frustrated with fundamentalism which we want to avoid at all costs. Yet others have fundamental issues with many religions because they require unconditional belief. We don't require unconditional belief, in fact we encourage people to question the world around them. Yet others are tired of how some religious groups try to mix up religion and politics. We want to separate the two. One can find many more issues that turn people to atheism, like the existence of a supreme being which we addressed in our posts "Does God Exist?" and "More on God". We can't cover everything here but feel free to suggest more reasons and we'll cover them here on the blog.

Now it might seem to you that we are an atheistic movement. Strictly speaking then we are not because after all we claim to be a religion. We claim that the atheistic movement is strong because of these various shortcomings of current religions as mentioned above. We think that many of the people that join the atheistic movement do so out of frustration and that the group that calls themselves atheists is very diverse. For example the Church of Integrity does not share a common path with the atheists that want to get rid of religion. We hope to be a shelter for those that are frustrated with current religions, feel they are somehow against their better knowledge but still want to be part of a bigger community and have some guidance in how to lead their life. Note we say guidance, ultimately people have to make their own decisions on how to lead their lifves.

It's easy to claim that we are a sell out somehow and we are just trying to get people by picking popular subjects. It is hard for us to defend ourselves against such claims but we point out that we have no economic or otherwise benefit of "stealing" people like that. The founders of the church simply went through many of the frustrations as mentioned above but yet didn't feel they shared a common path with the most aggressive atheists. We wanted to build a religion that is more of a way of life like Buddhism. The gain of taking part in such a religion is the community, having someone you can come to when things are not going good. We all need a shoulder to lean on. Sure, friends and family can definitely help so one could argue that religion is not necessary but we claim that we can do an even better job than friends and family and furthermore then not everyone is so lucky to have friends and family to lean on.

I think most mainstream atheism is fueled by hurting folk that are more than likely apostates of the Christian church. Why else would they be in attack position against Christianity. There are so many other beliefs they could attack but they choose almost exclusively Christianity.

Here is a post with an Atheist and Christian discussing things. http://whatisthechristianchurch.blogspot.com/2007/05/atheist-christian-conversation.html

I don't think atheists are specially bothered by christianity. It's just widespread in the western world and it's easy to be a critic of what you know best...

Yes, I'm an atheist ;)

I agree with zhu. Christians tend to be on the attack most days. The American culture, in spite of "God" being written into the constitution and all that, is a secular culture. Atheists simply represent that.

I'm an atheist, I don't believe in any Gods, I don't believe we need any religions.
Religion has done far more harm than good.
More wars and deaths have been caused by people who believe their religion is the right religion.
If people just stopped having religion, then maybe, just maybe, we could all sit down and talk rationally about the world and it's people.

As to why it's Christians who get attacked, it's simple.
Look at what is done in the name of the Christian God.
Our own president, a man who is supposed to represent all the people of this nation, (US) says that GOD is on our side only. That he blesses only the USA.
That we are in a war because the Muslims hate our way of life and our religion, and our own president says our religion is best.
It's not OUR religion, it's his.

This country has many diverse peoples and many diverse religious peoples, and our president divides us by stating his god is OUR god.
Then the people who believe that his god is their god, jump on the hate wagon with him, and tell us we're not true Americans because we're not Christian.

Isn't it obvious why an atheist would be so pissed off about Christianity?
We're not even considered citizens because we don't believe what they believe.

good attempt. however i feel there need not be one more RELIGION, rather a network to help each other (whenever required)

Do you consider any beliefs concerning new science, relativity and quantum physics. Science is now agreeing with eastern religions in terms of the mind. It seems that even the athiests will have to agree there is more to the world than matter in the very near future. It's in the maths. Respect, Kaetie

what about quantum physics? it appears to tie up, mathematically proofed, with what the buddhist/hindus/taoists/indigineous shamanic cultures have been telling us for centuries

I believe in a Higher Order of Life, and I think its amazing! I am interested in science because it seems like the scientist are at least trying to make an evidence-based attempt at understanding why we are here and what we are suppose to be doing.

I believe that The Christ existed, but I do not believe that Jesus himself was or is the Very God. I believe he was a teacher that understood the Universal Laws of that governs all things, and spent his life teaching these Laws to us.

But instead of us applying those teachings and be inspired to incorporate those laws in our lives, we did like we we always do, we made a religion out of him!

I love the teachings of Jesus. I think they are simple and full of wisdom, but I just cannot bring myself to believe that Jesus is the Very God.

This Universe is vast and really exciting, and to tell you the truth, I am absolutely in love with the search of it all.

Is Atheism the same as 'Mrs. Do As You Would be Done By?' [Charles Kingsley the Waterbabies] as that's what seems to predominate around here.

I am very saddened that many here do not believe in Jesus as God's Son or in God, Himself. I don't understand why people want to seem to fight against the One that created them and everything there is. This is a beautiful world, despite the devistating things that occur, and I wish that everyone would look around and see the magnitude of that and know that a higher being had to have had a hand in it's creation. Science is a study by man. Is man not imperfect? How can one take for granted the study of any person(s) based on that knowledge. You see how information handed forth by science changes on a yearly bases. You cannot put your faith in man because man is imperfect, can be wrong and can be very persuasive to suit their needs. However, God is not like that. He created this world for our use and enjoyment. He loves us enough to have sent His Son to shed His blood for the sins of ALL. He is perfect, never wrong and suggests a plan for salvation giving us the choice. Why do so many fight that? What's wrong with love and faith and knowing there's something bigger and better than us mere sinful human's out there? Don't you see that Satan is succeeding here in turning people away from God? Don't let Satan win your hearts. You don't want tomorrow to be your last day of life, and be in the lost state you're in! Turn to God before it's everlastingly too late!! Please!!

m.a.c., are you...I can't help it. Are you so easily blind-sided to think that the url you posted is is a real conversation? OAKAAAAY!

Okay, okay. Breathe...1...2...3...

Alrighty. On to Christian bashing...the discussion of, please. Because most internet traffic emanates from the US one is invariably going to see the blogosphere bombarded with Ameri-centric views. This means people living in the west who have grown up and lived with Christians and Christianity all their lives. This explains the so-called "attacks" on Christianity (zhu said as much in a nut shell). Ask any atheist (me included) and I'm sure they will tell you that they have the same view for all religions (not just Christianity).

What makes Christians think they are being dumped on? Simply scrutinizing ones belief system can bring with it a "world crashing down". Nobody wants that, but maybe they need it. We can't go on living in a way that revolves around one particular ideology. Atheists and secularists are NOT about their particular view. I would wager that most atheists (me NOT included, as I relish the idea of the end of religion altogether), but the vast majority of atheists/secularists have no qualms about people believing in a god. Just don't trample other peoples civil liberties in the process or relegate them to second-class citizenry (as expressed by Bush Sr)

In the end atheism is not about a god. It's about those who don't believe in such nonsense getting a foothold in public policy where religion has held sway for far too long. Society needs to be reshaped to consider and reconcile this.

Larro,
I am interested, please tell me if you were brought up in a certain religion? I ask because, you sound very bent on anything against God, to the point of being mean. Is that what happened to you? You had a bad experience? If you represent atheism, it's no wonder most would rather believe in a god!

Tammy,

I look around this planet and I am overwhelmed by its beauty every single day of my life. Yes, man is imperfect and will change and improve constantly what they know. How wonderful that there are people committed to provide some real evidence for how we came here, rather than telling us that there is a god because a book says so. This book is full of contradictions and atrocities, telling us about a god that is full of love but at the same time is hateful, vengeful and truly evil.

How can I possibly believe that Christianity and their God are the way to go when I know that even among Christians there are great differences... when Catholics say one thing and Protestants say another... when there is Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and I don't know what other religions out there. And all of them are as convinced as you, Tammy, that their religion is the one ultimate one.

Give me one real piece of evidence... and I'm not talking about the Bible, or the world around me. That is not evidence. And please don't tell me "because God said so". Nobody has ever met this God or talked to him... I mean really talked to him, not imagined or read something into an experience they had while they were asleep.

As for atheists in general... how is that Christians are allowed to talk us down, to degrade us, to tell us we're not worthy of being citizens (George Bush sen)... but atheists are not allowed to produce some critical thoughts and put them into words? That is hypocracy at its finest.

Hello Ute,
You sound like you have heard something about the Bible. Have you studyied it? or did you hear from others? I ask because, it's up to individuals to study to know when they are hearing the truth or false teaching. We shouldn't take someone elses word, no matter what religion, or not, we believe in. When did you become an atheist? How did you come to believe that way? Whey do you believe what you believe?
I'll let you answer those before continuing.
Tammy
